Traditional scientific and industrial high-speed (i.e., high frame rate) video cameras tend to be expensive. A typical low-end system runs $8,000 or $10,000 for a low-resolution monochrome camera. Some manufacturers include Redlake, Phantom and Photron.

The Sony NEX-FS700 is a professional camera that shoots at up to 240 fps in full HD resolution and 960 fps at lower resolutions. It costs over $6,000. The Sony Cyber-shot Digital Camera RX10 II ($1300) and other models in the RX10 and RX100 series have frame rates up to 960 fps.

Starting in 2007 new image sensors became available that made lower-cost high-speed cameras possible. The Casio High Speed Exilim series, the GoPro Hero3 and the Nikon 1 series are examples. They are priced from several hundred dollars to about $1000 and will make short movie clips at rates such as 300, 600 or 1200 frames/second. Unfortunately, many of these high-speed cameras become obsolete quickly! Check around to see if any are left in local stores or at online dealers. Also, check to make sure that the models you find do have high-speed capabilities.
